FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - e-Commerce Grant for SMI Companies
28 November 2000 - In today's new digital economy, local SMIs are faced with far greater challenges than ever before. Although the Internet extends a company's reach to international markets, it also opens the country's floodgate to foreign competition that introduces more competition for local SMIs.
Looking at the urgency of Internet facility, the Malaysian Government has launched a RM20 million E-Commerce Grant to specifically assist small and medium industry (SMI) companies kick-start their e-commerce initiatives, the new way of doing business. To be managed by Small and Medium Industries Development Corporation (SMIDEC), the programme is expected to benefit 2,000 SMIs in their e-commerce activities financing such as web site hosting, development, maintenance, etc. The programme will be in the form of a 70 percent grant or RM10,000 per SMI company, whichever is lower.
